TANG Somers: Join us Tuesday, September 17, at 6 pm, for a screening of Peter Greenaway’s A Zed & Two Noughts (UK/Netherlands, 1985, 115 min., 35mm to digital transfer), which screens as part of our Nature’s Underworld Film Series, featuring eight films inspired by the exhibition Mark Dion and Alexis Rockman: Journey to Nature’s Underworld, and our Whole Grain: Experiments in Film and Video program.Greenaway’s beautifully disturbing and darkly humorous take on erotic obsession and death begins with a horrific automobile-swan accident in front of the Rotterdam Zoo, where two women die and a third loses her leg. The two widowers, twin zoologists fixate on their wives’ bodies, and slowly become obsessed with evolution and decomposition—even going as far as to meticulously craft exquisitely morbid time-lapsed films of decaying creatures. This screening is free and open to the public.91¶¶Ňů Nature’s Underworld Film SeriesNature’s Underworld Film Series features both popular Hollywood cinema and experimental works that examine humankind’s strained relationship with the environment. Nature's Underworld Film Series: La Jetée (1962) & Weekend (1967)
Time: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
TANG Somers: Join us Thursday, October 24, at 6 pm, for a screening of two French classics: Chris Marker’s La JetĂ©e (1962, France, 28 min., 35mm to digital transfer) and Jean-Luc Godard’s Weekend (1967, France/Italy, 105 min., 35mm to digital transfer), which screens as part of our Nature’s Underworld Film Series, featuring eight films inspired by the exhibition Mark Dion and Alexis Rockman: Journey to Nature’s Underworld, and our Whole Grain: Experiments in Film and Video program.La JetĂ©e is one of the most influential, radical science-fiction films ever made, a tale of time travel told in still images. Chris Marker, filmmaker, poet, novelist, photographer, editor, and now videographer and digital multimedia artist, has been challenging moviegoers, philosophers, and himself for years with his complex queries about time, memory, and the rapid advancement of life on this planet.Weekend is a scathing late-sixties satire from Jean-Luc Godard, and is considered one of cinema’s great anarchic works. Determined to collect an inheritance from a dying relative, a bourgeois couple travel across the French countryside while civilization crashes and burns around them. Featuring a justly famous sequence in which the camera tracks along a seemingly endless traffic jam, and rich with historical and literary references, Weekend is a surreally funny and disturbing call for revolution, a depiction of society reverting to savagery, and— according to the credits—the end of cinema itself.91¶¶Ňů Nature’s Underworld Film SeriesNature’s Underworld Film Series features both popular Hollywood cinema and experimental works that examine humankind’s strained relationship with the environment. Nature's Underworld Film Series: Silent Running (1972)
Time: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
TANG Somers: Join us Thursday, November 14, at 6 pm, for Douglas Trumbull’s Silent Running (1972, US, 89 min., 35mm to digital transfer), which screens as part of our Nature’s Underworld Film Series, featuring eight films inspired by the exhibition Mark Dion and Alexis Rockman: Journey to Nature’s Underworld. In the not-so-distant future, Earth is barren of all flora and fauna, with what remains of the planet’s former ecosystems preserved aboard a fleet of greenhouses orbiting in space. When the crews are ordered to destroy the remaining specimens, one botanist, Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern, The ’Burbs), rebels and flees towards Saturn in a desperate bid to preserve his own little piece of Earth that was, accompanied only by the ship’s three service robots. Featuring a captivating central performance by Dern, visual effects that rival anything in 2001 and a powerful ecological message, Silent Running is a haunting and prescient sci-fi classic that resonates even more strongly today than it did at the time of its original release.91¶¶Ňů Nature’s Underworld Film SeriesNature’s Underworld Film Series features both popular Hollywood cinema and experimental work that examine humankind’s strained relationship with the environment and is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Mark Dion and Alexis Rockman: Journey to Nature’s Underworld. Rosny, artist Deborah Stratman offers a stunning array of images, from microscopic forms to vast landscapes, and seeks a picture of evolution without humans at the center.“An entrancing blend of hard science and ephemeral existentialism.” – Michael Fox, KQED“Stratman’s haunting, iridescent work of science-nonfiction actively decenters the human perspective, narrating the history and the speculative future of the universe with rocks as its protagonists.” – Devika Girish, Film Comment91¶¶Ňů Nature’s Underworld Film SeriesNature’s Underworld Film Series features both popular Hollywood cinema and experimental works that examine humankind’s strained relationship with the environment.
