A chronological and site-specific investigation of design in London, including objects and architecture. From the Wedgwood china company鈥檚 inauguration of division of labor and urban showrooms, to the Underground鈥檚 (subway) innovative design practices, and London鈥檚 unique concentration of Brutalist buildings, London (and Britain) has established itself as a key nexus for modern design with enormous influence globally. An interdisciplinary approach 鈥� that is particularly attentive to class issues 鈥� including art history, history, urban studies, architecture studies, gender studies, philosophy, and sociology will reveal complex modern London鈥檚 meaning, develop evidence-based visual analysis and writing skills, and challenge conventional understandings about urban London.
Professor Hauser, recipient of the college鈥檚 teaching award, teaches courses on modern and contemporary art history, including courses on photography and design history.
