It shows how the poet Heinrich Heine imagined the geographically dispersed, multilingual literature of the Jewish diaspora as prefiguring the concept of world literature. It further argues that Heine's meditations on Jewish literature anticipate contemporary discussions about untranslatability and multilingualism in world literature.
