The minutes of November 10 and November 24 were approved with changes. II. The Committee planned for the December 5 faculty meeting. III. Sarah Goodwin, Faculty Assessment Coordinator, briefed the Committee on the Assessment Steering subcommittee’s progress. The subcommittee had two goals this semester. Fulfilling one of them, the subcommittee is preparing to hire a part-time assessment facilitator, to be housed in the Registrar/Institutional Research Office. The second goal was the drafting of learning goals for the College. The subcommittee has synthesized assessment-related documents going back to a 1997 CEPP report to guide it in identifying a small number of learning outcomes that reflect Skidmore’s culture. As a check on that work, and as a comparison, the subcommittee has examined the AACU’s “Liberal Education and America’s Promise” initiative (which pulled together ten years of research on learning outcomes) and Wabash College’s “National Study of Liberal Arts Education” project. The subcommittee’s goal-setting effort has also been informed by its discussions with the Board of Trustees’ Academic Affairs committee and feedback from SGA (and, in the near future, Academic Council). The goals are nearing finalization and will likely be submitted to CEPP by the end of the semester. The long-term question of what will be done with the goals and how to assess them remains. However, the subcommittee has begun to consider how assessment will be carried out, and a College-level workshop on assessment will likely occur in May. The College has also co-signed a statement produced by the Consortium on Financing Higher Education and endorsed by nearly 100 selective colleges and universities that affirms the importance of local (as opposed to standardized) approaches to assessment; it also affirms the importance of seeking evidence not only for the learning of content but also for the habits of mind students develop over time. The VPAA noted that reflexivity is at the heart of assessment efforts and that they should be kept simple. Evidence is crucial to assessment, and it may take many forms. IV. CEPP briefly discussed the Study Days proposal forwarded by David Karp, Interim Associate Dean of Student Affairs.
