Minutes of January 31 were modified and approved. The Committee welcomed Registrar and Director of Institutional Research Ann Henderson, who reported on the highlights of the latest National Survey of Student Engagement. The College first administered the NSSE to members of the class of 2003, and this second administration included data gathered from the classes of 2007 and 2010. One new aspect of this administration of NSSE was the ability to select a Custom Group of 47 institutions with characteristics similar to Skidmores. Skidmore First Year students mean scores were appreciably higher than the Custom Groups for items such as: Number of papers of 5-19 pages, Arts attendance, Using e-mail for instructor contact, and Intent to study abroad. First Year students means were lower on: Spirituality, Off-campus work, Quantitative items, Judgment-related courses, Community welfare experiences, and Future work-related topics such as Real-world problem solving, Discussions with professors regarding career plans, and Job-related knowledge. Seniors scored higher than the Custom Group for: Study abroad, Foreign language courses, Arts experiences, and Independent study/internships and the like. Seniors scored lower on: Working off campus, Spirituality, Time relaxing (Skidmore students relax more), Quantitative skills, and Diversity measures. Compared to first year students in 2003, last falls first year students showed: improvement in areas identified as goals of the First Year Experience, a greater emphasis on studying, improvement on service-learning related items, heightened understanding of others, an increase in quantitative areas of study, and more interest in foreign language, faculty-student research, capstone experiences, and studying aborad. However, they also indicated: reduced quality of interactions with administrators and faculty, discussing ideas from readings outside of class, and increasing emphasis on memorizing facts. Compared to 2003 seniors, class of 2007 members: completed more off-campus volunteer and field experiences (and the like) and studied abroad at a higher rate, but they participated in fewer research experiences with faculty. Lengthy discussions were interspersed throughout Anns presentation. Some of these discussions focused on the analysis and interpretation of the NSSE data. Ann will post her report, previously received by the Committee, for broader dissemination after she receives CEPPs formal feedback. The Dean of the Faculty updated the Committee on the Science Strategic Plan. Muriel charged the working group, which will emphasize science literacy, the interdisciplinary focus of the science academic program (including faculty-student research collaboration), and infrastructure needs. By the end of the current semester the working group is expected to report to CEPP and to hold an open forum for science faculty and one specifically on science literacy for all faculty. Meeting was adjourned at 7:20.
