Finding her calling at Skidmore: Lizbeth Mendoza ’25

Lizbeth Mendoza ’25 from Queens, New York, arrived at Skidmore’s campus filled with anticipation at the start of her first year, eager for the new experiences and opportunities that awaited her.

Initially uncertain about her academic direction, Lizbeth embraced exploration across disciplines, from the arts to the sciences, embodying the ethos that Creative Thought Matters. Through this exploration, Lizbeth discovered her passion for sciences and is pursuing a major in neuroscience with a minor in sociology

Committed to seizing the diverse opportunities Skidmore offers, Lizbeth remains active both on and off campus. She engages in computational biophysics research under Associate Professor Lia Ball, gaining valuable skills in this emerging field. She attended a computational science conference in South Carolina, where she presented a poster based on her research findings. This opportunity not only allowed her to showcase her knowledge but also enabled her to connect with fellow scientists — a rewarding highlight early in her college journey, made possible through full funding.

Beyond academics, Lizbeth contributes as a student worker in the Office of Special Programs and at Scribner Library. For recreation and community, she thrives as a member of Raicés, the Latinx multicultural club. This involvement not only fosters a sense of belonging but also enriches her college experience, making Skidmore feel like home.

Looking ahead, Lizbeth envisions a career in neuroscience research, focusing on testing the efficacy of drugs and treatments for neurological disorders. She is contemplating pursuing a Ph.D. in neuroscience to further her expertise in the field.

Reflecting on her journey to Skidmore, Lizbeth recalls initial concerns about being able to afford college. Through diligent efforts in applying for scholarships and financial aid, she was pleasantly surprised by Skidmore’s support, which exceeded her expectations.

Grateful for the opportunities to grow personally and academically at Skidmore, Lizbeth is poised to chart a path toward future successes.
